Your apps' framing is making your decisions for you. Today we unpack this through building my own stock dashboard.
Let me talk about sovereignty in the digital age. Sounds grand, right? It's simple. The apps you open every day are making decisions for you. Recognizing this is the starting point.
Today's example is building my own stock dashboard (Jubjub) with Claude Artifact. "Why build one when the brokerage app already exists?" — because that app's framing was deciding my judgment. This isn't only about stocks. Three years from now, whatever dashboard tool we have, the principle still holds.
The same numbers lead to different decisions depending on how they're shown. Called the "framing effect." Not a psychology experiment — something you live through every day.
Take brokerage apps. An app that shows returns in big red text vs one that shows them in small gray text. Same return. Different feeling. Big red says "sell!" Small gray says "wait." Apps know this gap and design for it. You don't, and you follow.
I didn't know this about myself for a month. The brokerage app showed returns only in green or red, so every morning my first thought was "red today — should I sell?" That wasn't my judgment. It was the app's judgment, and I couldn't see the difference. One day I closed the app and looked at the same numbers in a spreadsheet. Identical figures. The urge to sell vanished. That was the moment I realized a single color had been steering me.
Not a small problem. An app you open dozens of times a day, across years, molds your judgment style. Your money, not your frame.
I sensed something off and built my own dashboard. One hour with Claude Artifact, a simple dashboard called "Jubjub."
Mine differs from the brokerage app. Instead of return rate, it prominently shows days since entry. Because I'm not a day trader. Instead of red/blue, it marks goal-met status with a single circle — full when met, empty when not.
The specific numbers also differ. The brokerage app shows two decimal places. +3.27%. My dashboard drops the decimals. +3%. That gap matters. With decimals, you keep checking whether the 3.27 a minute ago is now 3.28. Without them, 3% is just 3%. Same as ten minutes ago. That one rounding decision cut my daily check-ins from twenty to three.
Same data, different question. The brokerage app asks me "sell now?" Mine asks "am I still on the original plan?" This question difference completely changed my investing behavior.
The same data produces different conclusions depending on whose frame reads it.
Picture a chef's scale and a pharmacist's scale. Both measure 5 grams. The readouts are different.
The chef's scale reads in 1g increments. 5 grams shows as "a pinch of salt." The pharmacist's scale reads in 0.01g. 5 grams shows as "5,000 milligrams." Same weight, completely different feelings and decisions.
The chef-scale user says "maybe a bit more?" The pharmacist-scale user says "let me verify precision." The scale (tool) shapes behavior.
The app you open every day is also a scale. Which scale you use decides your daily decisions.
"Build your own" sounds hard, but tools like Claude Artifact make it much easier. Thirty minutes produces a viewer of your own.
How to start:
For example, if a fitness app highlights "today's step count," my dashboard might highlight "this week's average." Reframe around the metric that actually matters to me.
Pushing this to extremes — building every app — isn't the point. The point is recognition. Recognizing whose frame you're seeing. Asking whether that frame fits your judgment. When it doesn't, either change settings or build a separate viewer.
Once a week, ask: "how is this app's frame shaping my judgment style?" If the answer is "not sure," that's the starting point.
Here's one more question. "What feeling is left the moment I close this app?" If it's anxiety, the frame is producing anxiety. If it's urgency, it's producing urgency. If it's calm, the tool fits. Emotion is the fingerprint of framing. The frame hides. The feeling stays.
Sovereignty in the digital age is seeing data through your own frame. The same data yields different decisions under different frames. Change the frame, change the life.
Three words to carry — Frame. Recognize. Reframe. Recognize first. Reframe where needed.
This isn't only about stock dashboards. Social media feeds, fitness apps, diet apps, productivity apps — all of them are molding you with their frame. In the AI era, building your own dashboard is a sovereignty issue, not a tech issue. Technology changes. The principle of framing doesn't.
